FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Drummer: 'Metal Fans Are Very Loyal'
October 11, 2013In a brand new interview with MLive.com, drummer Jeremy Spencer of Las Vegas metallers FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH spoke about the state of metal and its fan base compared to years and decades ago.
"Metal fans are very loyal; they decide what they like and they stick with it pretty much," e said.
"I think good songs will always find an audience," he added. "So I think that if you continue to do the best you can and write the best songs that you can, I think they will find an audience.
"We don't really get too wrapped up in that stuff. We just kind of do what we do and we try to make records that we like and feel that we've grown into. We try to do stuff we feel comfortable with as musicians. The rest of that stuff you really can't control.
"I'm grateful to be in a position where we are still selling records in a day of age where people aren't really buying them so much. But people are buying DEATH PUNCH records and that's great."
Spencer also spoke about what it takes as a drummer and band as a whole to really deliver the emotions of angst, intensity and enthusiasm that are projected on the band's new album, "The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell, Volume 1".
"We try to recycle what we're doing out to the crowd and it seems to come right back at us like a big, chaotic energy ball," he laughed.
"I do what I think the song needs; I always play for the song," he continued. "It just so happens that our music is very physical and I get to do a lot during the song. There's a lot of double bass, and that's very stimulating to me. I always gravitate toward double bass-style drumming. I always play for the song, whatever it needs. I put my needs second; any stimulation I made need musically is second compared to what the song needs. There are ways to work in my (individuality) into a song, but I always just try to play to the strength of the song, enhance the hooks and make drum parts appear."
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH's upcoming album, "The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell, Volume 2", is due out on November 19 and contains a surprising cover of the classic folk song "House Of The Rising Sun".
The new disc is the second half of a two-record set, with "Volume 1" coming out in July.
"The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell, Volume 1" debuted at No. 2o on the Billboard album chart, selling 113,000 copies in its first week of release.
Spencer told Billboard about the second CD, "You can interchange any song from either (album). If you're a fan of the fist one you're gonna dig the second one . . . we wanted to make them both kind of balanced and take listener kind of on a roller coaster ride, not have 10 songs of one style on one and 10 of another style on the other."
The first single from "Volume 2" is called "Battle Born" and is accompanied by a video that celebrates the group's fans.
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH is currently on a headlining North American tour that brings the band to Providence, Rhode Island on Friday (October 11).
